St. Mary the Virgin began Christmas Eve, 2000, as the Rev. Harry Bahlow celebrated the eucharist in the Centenary Methodist Church, using the the Methodist Prayer book, with the Episcopal bishop's permission. Four Episcopalians were present. Later the eight-to-10 members moved their services to the Unicoi Methodist Church for a year, then they rented the present storefront. About 20 members now make up the worshiping community.
